Pomorskie Bridges
LED lighting enhances heritage and elegance of bridges at night with low energy consumption
Home to over a hundred bridges, the city of Wroclaw is known as the “Polish Venice”. The Pomorskie Bridges – a trio of bridges including the Central Bridge built in 1879, the stone Southern Bridge, completed in 1905 and the Northern Bridge, built in 1930 – were reopened to pedestrians, motorists and cyclists on 30th January 2023 after three years of renovation. The bridges have been cleaned, missing parts replaced and pipes re-routed to restore the bridges to their former glory.
Traditional lanterns to preserve heritage
As part of the renovation, separate lanes have been created for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. There is also a separate lane for trams and buses that can only be used by taxis and public transport vehicles.
To ensure the safety of all users after dark, the local authorities wanted a highly efficient lighting solution that would use the latest energy-saving technologies to minimise running costs and provide a greener infrastructure for a modern city.
It was also essential that the luminaire helped to preserve the heritage of the bridges and recreate their former appearance, so that they remain monumental at night.
ALBANY LED, a highly efficient luminaire for historic sites
The refined ALBANY LED, with its elegant curves reminiscent of the Victorian era, was the ideal choice for lighting for the bridges. The luminaires are suspended from the original pinnacles of the bridges, which have also been restored.
They deliver a soft high quality light that enhances the character of the bridge after dark and provide excellent visibility. Thanks to the ALBANY LED’s flat protector, the light is directed downwards to ensure a uniform lighting across the bridges, minimising light pollution and preserving dark skies too.
This classical luminaire ensures a safe and comfortable passage for all with a low energy consumption to reduce costs and CO2 emissions.
A visually stunning identity
The energy-saving ENYO, SCULPLINE and SCULPDOT floodlights were chosen to enhance the architecture of the bridges. Installed on special brackets, the compact ENYO directs the light onto the 68 meticulously restored gargoyles, transforming them into a night-time feature to be admired.
The shadows cast by the floodlights highlight the depth of the structures, giving a unique perspective and creating eye-catching features. Brought to life at night, the bridges have become visually appealing landmarks on the cityscape.
Elegance by day and by night
Residents are delighted with the restored bridges that provide a safe and memorable path to travel on, with magnificent views of the city after sunset. True to themselves, the bridges remain monumental and elegant both by day and by night.
